3.1 Introduction

HTML is the basic tool for designing a web page.  HTML is the acronym for Hyper Text Markup Language.  It was created by the programmers of the CERN lab in Switzerland.  HTML allows you to format text, add graphics, sound, and video in your web page.  It also allows you to document the text and to mark the headings, title, table and forms.  HTML consists of tags embedded in the text of a document.  The browser reading the document interprets these markup tags to help format the document for subsequent display to a reader.  However, many of the decision about layout are made by the browser.
