Icon who was known for his dark tales and poems, created the genre of detective fiction with “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and helped found science fiction.
Before fame he was named after a character in William Shakespeare’s King Lear, which was the play his actor parents performed in 1809.
He specialized in cryptology and cosmology, and became the first American writer to make a living off his poems and stories.
He had a younger sister named Rosalie and an older brother named William, and was adopted after his parents died. He and his stepfather were fierce enemies.
Gaston Leroux followed in his footsteps, making huge contributions to the French detective fiction genre.
