UPSC Geologist & Geo-Scientist Exam Eligibility Details

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Combined Geologist & Geo-Scientist Examination eligibility details are as follows..l..

1) Nationality: A candidate must be
a.  a Citizen of India,(or)
b.  a subject of Nepal, (or)
c.  a subject of Bhutan, (or)
d.  a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India. (or)
e. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appoint-ment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

2) Age: Candidate should be between 21 to 32 years for Geologist, Geophysicist and  Chemist posts, should be the age between 21 to 35 years for Jr Hydrogeologist  posts.

3) Age Relaxation:
* 5 years for  SC/ST candidates
* 3 years for OBC candidates.
* 5 years for those applicants who ordinarily been domiciled in the Kashmir Division in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period 01-01-1980 to 31-12-1989.
* 3 years for Defense Services personnel (disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence there of).
* 5 years for ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs.
*10 years for  blind, deaf-mute and Orthopaedically handicapped persons.

4) Educational Qualification: 

(a). For Geologists Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India: Masters Degree in Geological Science or Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science and Resource management or Oceanography and  Coastal Areas Studies or Petroleum Geosciences or Petroleum Exploration or Geochemistry or Geological Technology from a university incorporated by an Act of the central or State Legislature in India or an Educational Institution established by an Act of Parliament  or declared to be deemed university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 (3 of 1956).

(b). For Geophysicists Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India: M.Sc. in Physics or Applied Physics or M.Sc. (Geophysics) or Integrated M.Sc. (Exploration Geophysics) or M.Sc (Applied Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Marine Geophysics) or M.Sc. (Tech.) (Applied Geophysics) from a University incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature in India or other educational institutes established by an Act of the Parliament or declared to be deemed universities under the University Grants Commission Act, 1956.

(c). For Chemists Group ‘A’ in Geological Survey of India: M. Sc. in Chemistry or Applied Chemistryor Analytical Chemistry from a University incorporated by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature or other educational Institutes established by an Act of the Parliament or declared to be deemed Universities under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 i.e. recognized University.

(d). For Junior Hydrogeologists (Scientist-B) Group ‘A’ in Central Ground Water Board: Masters Degree in Geology or Applied Geology or marine Geology from a from a university incorporated by an Act of the central or State Legislature in India or an Educational Institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed university under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or Masters Degree in Hydrogeology from a recognised university.

5) Physical standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Combined Geo-Scientist & Geologist Examination as per the regulations specified in the examination notification.

Scheme of Examination: The examination shall be conducted according to the following Plan :
Part I.—Written examination in the subjects as set out in para 2 below.
Part II.—Interview for personality Test of such candidates as may be called by the Commission, carrying a maximum of 200 marks.

2. The following will be the subjects for the written examination :

1 Geology Paper I 3 hrs 200
2 Geology Paper II 3 hrs 200
3 Hydrogeology 3 hrs 200

* Candidates competing for selection to the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Junior Hydro geologist  will be required to appear in all the subjects mentioned against respective category above.
* Candidates competing for selection for both the posts of Geologist and Jr. Hydro geologist will be required to appear in all the subjects mentioned against Categories 1 and 4 above.
*If any candidate failed to appear in any one or more of above papers, meant for written examination for selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, their candidature shall stand rejected and part of written examination appeared by them shall not be evaluated and counted for any purpose.

2) Interview/Personality Test: The Test carries 200 marks.  The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before them a record of their career. The object of the interview is to assess their suitability for the posts for which they has competed. Special attention will be paid in the Personality Test to assessing the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application, integrity of character and aptitude for adapting themselves to the field life.

3) Document Verification: Verification of eligibility conditions with reference to original documents is taken up only after the candidate is qualified for Interview/ Personality Test

UPSC Selection Procedure consists of:
1. Written Examination
2. Interview/ Personality Test
3. Document Verification

1. Written Examination:
i. Geologists written exam consists of 4 papers General English, Geology Paper-I, II & III
ii. Geophysicists Exam consists of General English, Geophysicist Paper-I, II & III
iii. Chemist Exam consists of General English, Chemistry Paper-I, II & III
iv. Jounier  Hydrogeologist Exam consists of Geology paper I & II, Hydrogeology.
v. Maximum Marks 100 for General English & 200 for remaining all Papers.
vi. In this examination all the subjects will be of conventional (essay) type with English language question papers. Answers must be in English only.
vii. Candidates must write their papers with their own hand. The commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination.

2. Interview/ Personality Test: The Test carries 200 marks. The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before them a record of their career. Exam Syllabus: Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Combined Geologist & Geo-Scientist Examination once in a year. Exam syllabus details are given below…

Syllabus of the Written Examination: The standard of the paper in General English will be such as may be expected of a Science Graduate. he papers on geological subjects will be approximately of the MSc degree standard standard of an Indian University and questions will generally be set to test the candidate’s grasp of the fundamentals in each subject.

General English Paper: Candidate will be required to write a short Essay in English. Other questions will be designed to test their under-standing of English and workmanlike use of words.
